You Might have sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a critical disorder that results in a patient’s brain and body receiving a lack of oxygen while sleeping.

Sleep apnea may be responsible for poor performance in your everyday activities and can lead to many serious health issues.

RISK AND DANGERS

Why are the Risks of Sleep Apnea?

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Stroke
  3. Heart failure, irregular heartbeats and heart attacks
  4. Diabetes
  5. Depression
  6. Headaches and worsening of ADHD

Why is Sleep Apnea Dangerous?

Once the patient is asleep and stops breathing, the heart rate will slow down to conserve oxygen. When oxygen is needed again, the patient’s heart rate will spike in order to wake the body up for oxygen. This fluctuation of the heart rate is extremely harsh on the heart, creating a greater risk for heart attacks and strokes.

CAUSE AND TREATMENTS

What causes Sleep Apnea?

Most sleep apnea patients are overweight. Once the patient falls asleep, the muscles in the mouth become relaxed and block the airway causing snoring and difficulty breathing.

How to treat Sleep Apnea

While weight loss improves sleep apnea, it can be difficult for a sleepy patient to loss weight. It is recommended that the patient is fitted for a sleep device to open the patient’s airway while they sleep.
